Solskjaer has put his faith in Marcus Rashford and both striker and Manchester United players entirely..
The board went up flashing numbers seven and nine but
Manchester United ‘s No 10 did not flinch.
Marcus Rashford was fiddling with his socks, busy lining up a free-kick 30 yards out, and knew he need not look back towards the bench as the cavalry made their entrance by way of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer retained the faith in a youngster he so obviously adores, despite this remaining goalless and United not really threatening.
The easy option would have been to hook the central striker.Buoyed by the decision not to, Rashford hammered the set piece towards goal.
The shot was true and bounced right in front of Martin Dubravka, who spilled and Lukaku’s first touch was to tuck into the net.
And there they had it. In a game during which United spluttered for large parts, Lukaku had the opener within seconds of coming on. Solskjaer can do no wrong right now, the substitution perfect.
Rashford’s technique, the long straight run, made life difficult for Dubravka and the result was just reward for a 21-year-old who stuck at it when many others might not have.
This was a different night for Rashford, a different kind of challenge against the physicality of Jamaal Lascelles. Time on the ball was at a premium, Rashford – leading the line again – smashed into by Newcastle’s captain thrice in the opening 24 minutes.
